Each reflection centers on shared human values—compassion, reason, integrity, and service—while respecting freedom of conscience and the separation of religion and government. Good morning, Chairman Zembower, Commissioners, staff, and neighbors.

As summer wraps us in its warmth and long days, we gather with purpose and hope for what is possible.

Summer invites us to take stock—to nurture what’s working, tend to what needs care, and keep reaching toward the future we want to build together.

Let us take a moment to reflect on the heart of public service.

Thomas Jefferson once wrote, “The care of human life and happiness… is the first and only legitimate object of good government.”

· May those words ground us as we consider the needs of our neighbors—not just today, but in the seasons to come.

· May we bring empathy to our debates, clarity to our decisions, and humility to our leadership.

· Let us listen well, speak thoughtfully, and work toward solutions that reflect our shared commitment to Seminole County’s well-being.

With gratitude for this responsibility—and for the opportunity to lead together—let us begin today’s work with clear eyes, steady hands, and an open mind.

7 July 2025 - Deland Council

Good evening, and thank you, Mayor Cloudman and City Commissioners for this opportunity to address you today. As a resident of Victoria Park, it’s an honor to be here representing the Central Florida Freethought Community.

With the close of this past weekend’s festivities and fireworks celebrating the day a congress of colonials declared their independence from the most powerful nation on earth, it’s appropriate at this meeting to remember the other meaning of Independence Day.

The Declaration of Independence marked the beginning of a great experiment cooked up by a handful of radicals whom we today call the Founding Fathers. Their idea was that this newly declared nation would have no emperors, no hereditary kings. Instead, this upstart nation would be ruled by the people themselves through their democratically elected representatives. Monarchs around the world laughed, certain it wouldn’t last.

Almost 250 years later, here you are the democratically elected representatives of the people of DeLand, the inheritors of the great experiment.

Accordingly, we the people of DeLand ask that your deliberations today be guided by evidence-based thinking and open hearts.

We ask that you remember that behind each agenda item are real people — parents, students, business folks, retirees — all counting on you to act with foresight and fairness.

And, finally, as you move through tonight’s business know that by striving always for the common good you are honoring the legacy of those radicals who shaped the noble character of our country.

As we convene this afternoon, let us pause and recognize that this meeting springs from care, civic duty, and a collective desire to build a better county.

Here in Seminole County, we know that strong communities are shaped by collaboration, respect, and the everyday contributions of residents, leaders, and public servants alike.

Each decision we make echoes beyond this chamber, touching families, students, business owners, and all community members alike.

·      In the spirit of open-hearted reflection, may we embrace evidence and empathy as our guiding tools.

·      Let us honor the diverse experiences that enrich us.

·      May we remember that when we listen- truly listen -we unlock better solutions for everyone.

·      And let us invite every voice into the conversation because that is when progress flourishes.

Today and always, may we be guided by reason, respect, and a shared vision for the future.

Good morning, Commissioners, staff, and neighbors—

Let’s pause for a moment to acknowledge the shared responsibility we carry for Lake County and its people.

Each of us arrived today with different stories, beliefs, and hopes, yet we are united by a common mission: to shape a community where every person can thrive.

Today is National Teachers Day, so let us celebrate the educators—past and present—who ignite curiosity, nurture resilience, and hand the next generation the keys to possibility.

As Mr. Rogers reminded us, “Life is for service.”

May we be guided by curiosity and evidence, open to new ideas that spark progress.

May we temper debate with empathy, honoring the dignity of every voice, especially those who are seldom heard.

Let our choices reflect courage and compassion, remembering that the measure of our decisions is how they lift our neighbors who need it most.

As we steward the lakes, hills, and heritage entrusted to us, may we kindle a spirit of collaboration that turns possibility into reality.

Together, let’s build a tomorrow worthy of the children who will inherit it.

Mayor Keogh, council members and staff, thank you for this moment of participation in your meeting.

We begin with gratitude and reflection; we live in a free society where myriad voices and beliefs are respected and even celebrated. And as constituents, we share the responsibility, along with you, to preserve and nurture our diverse communities.

We ask that every stakeholder is given a voice in shaping our community, and that the voiceless will be remembered in our discussions.

We are hopeful that the deliberations you engage in now, and in the future, include a few guiding principles:

Decisions made with evidence and veracity,

Acceptance of those who grow-up, live, and love, differently,

Abiding regard for the diversity and dignity of those who are served,

And keeping to the principles of logic, compassion, and justice.

And finally I leave you with inspiration from Theodore Roosevelt, “Here is your country. Cherish these natural wonders, cherish the natural resources, cherish the history and romance as a sacred heritage, for your children and your children's children. Do not let selfish men or greedy interests skin your country of its beauty, its riches or its romance.”

 Tonight, let us remember that progress depends on our willingness to listen, to learn, and to seek solutions grounded in evidence and understanding the needs of others.

 As we work together, may we strive to show our shared humanity in every discussion, always uplifting one another and strengthening the community.

 And may we remember that leadership is about service—serving others, earning their trust, and ensuring that the welfare of every member of Eustis is considered.

As we gather to serve, let us take a moment to reflect on the opportunity before us. Local government is where ideas become action, where decisions shape lives, and where people from different walks of life come together to build something greater than themselves.

Each of us here carries unique experiences, beliefs, and perspectives. But what unites us is a shared commitment to this community—a desire to see Volusia County thrive, to ensure fairness in our policies, and to leave things better for those who come after us.

Progress is not achieved in isolation; it requires cooperation, patience, and the courage to listen as well as lead. As American author Edward Everett Hale once said, “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”

·       Keeping this in mind, may we approach today’s work with open minds, steady hands, and a focus on what is just.

·       May we be guided by wisdom, not haste—by compassion, not division.

·       May we seek solutions that are not just efficient, but equitable, not just practical, but principled.

That’s a quote attributed to both Henry Ford and Edward Everett Hale.

Regardless of the author, tonight, as we engage in discussion and decision-making, let us remember that real progress happens not in isolation, but in cooperation, with respect, and with a shared commitment to the common good.

May we approach our work with wisdom and fairness, embracing both the responsibility and the privilege of public service.

May our choices reflect integrity, foresight, and a deep concern for those we represent.

And may we leave these chambers tonight knowing that, through our efforts, we have helped move the City forward—not just for today, for this fiscal year, or this term of office, but for the future that lies beyond our sight today.

 As constituents, we share the responsibility, along with you, to preserve and nurture our communities.

 We recognize that our communities become more diverse every day.

 We also know that we live in an environment that is both wondrous and fragile.

 As decisions are made, now and in the future, we ask that every stakeholder is given a voice in shaping our community, and that the voiceless will be remembered in our discussions.

 May every position, assertion, motion, or debate be based upon sufficient research and reliable evidence.

 And ultimately, we look to all of our elected and appointed public servants to provide informed leadership, peaceful resolution, and fair directives.

 May I leave you today with these thoughts from Theodore Roosevelt: "There are good men and bad men of all nationalities, creeds and colors; and if this world of ours is ever to become what we hope some day it may become, it must be by the general recognition that the man's heart and soul, the man's worth and actions, determine his standing."
