Thank you, Mayor Lowndes, Council Members, Staff, and the community, for the opportunity to offer opening words this evening.

As we begin tonight, let us take this moment to silence our thoughts and focus on the tasks at hand.

We are a strong and diverse group held together by shared love of community. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”

This evening we will recognize our community’s first responders and the critical role they play in safeguarding our city and citizens. Let us be intentional in honoring the important role they have and the service they provide us all.

Tonight, may we work together with honesty and integrity.

May we appreciate each and every voice.

And let us be guided by rational thought and a sense of shared responsibility.
